The NL government is providing funding to support the expansion of the province's growing lobster fishery. Fisheries Minister Gerry Byrne notes that warming waters are allowing lobster to thrive in NL's bays and inlets.
According to Byrne, harvesters have experienced a 263% increase in landings in the province, including along the west, south, and southwest coasts, as well as parts of the northeast coast. This growth is from 5.7 million pounds of lobster to 20.7 million pounds over 10 years, with the value increasing by 345%.
The province has allocated 3.5 million to aid in expanding the fishery, providing up to $100,000 in assistance depending on the technology required and project risk. Proposals must be submitted by May 16.
